On April 26 afternoon, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced that it had carried out another wave of strikes against Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon.

Israeli fighter jets carried out strikes against buildings where Hezbollah fighters were gathered, in towns of Tayr Harfa and Ayta ash-Shab, the IDF said in a statement, adding that tanks also shelled areas near the towns of Yarine and Dhayra to "remove threats".

There were no reports of civilian casualties in Lebanese media after the strikes. Hezbollah didn't also announce the death of any of its fighters.

The strikes came after Hezbollah fighters ambushed an Israeli military convoy in the occupied Lebanon Kfarchouba hills late on April 25. Two vehicles were destroyed by guided missiles as well as rockets and artillery fire. An Israeli Arab man working as a truck driver was killed in the ambush.

Hezbollah said that the ambush was carried out to "to support the steadfast Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and in support of their brave and honorable resistance".

The clashes on the Lebanese-Israeli border first broke out after the start of the Israeli war on Gaza last October, with Hezbollah and its allies carrying out attacks in support of the besieged Palestinian enclave.

So far, the clashes have resulted in nine civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of at least 11 IDF soldiers and reservists. On the Lebanese side, more than 400 people have been killed, including 269 fighters of Hezbollah and at least 70 civilians.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said on April 26 that it removed the remains of an intercepted Iranian ballistic missile that was found by hikers near the Ye'elim stream, close to the town of Arad, in southern Israel earlier this week.

An Israeli Air Force CH-53 helicopter lifted the intercepted missile out of the area to another location, where the Fire and Rescue Services removed any hazardous materials, the IDF said, adding that the remains were then taken to an army base to be further examined.

According to the IDF, the operation, coordinated by the Home Front Command, was "complex" due to the weight of the missile and the difficult terrain.

The missile was one of 120 fired at Israel in the Iranian attack on April 13-14. Some 170 suicide drones and 30 cruise missiles were also launched during the attack, which was carried out by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps a response to an Israeli strike that targeted the Iranian embassy in the Syrian capital, Damascus, at the start of the month. Several senior members of the guards were killed in the strike.

Israel alleged that 99% of the Iranian projectiles were intercepted by the IDF with help from American, British French and Jordanian forces, including all the suicide drones and cruise missiles. However, it was revealed later that nine ballistic missiles hit two air bases in the south of the country and another projectile landed in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights.

The ballistic missiles used in the attack were reportedly of the Emad, Ghadr-110, Kheibar Shekan and Shahab-3B types. The remains found near the Ye'elim stream likely belong to a Ghadr-110 missile. It is unclear however if the missile was indeed intercepted as the IDF claimed.

Israel responded to the Iranian attack on April 13 by attacking the 8th Shekari Air Base near the city of Isfahan using ballistic missiles launched by warplanes from over the Syrian border with Jordan and Iraq as well as small suicide drones that were allegedly launched from within Iranian territory.

Overall, the Iranian attack revealed serious problems with the Israeli missile defense network. It also sent a strong message to Israel and its allies.

3. More Than Half Of Americans Criticise Financing $61 Billion To Ukraine

More Than Half Of Americans Criticise Financing $61 Billion To Ukraine

Click to see the full-size image

Written by Ahmed Adel, Cairo-based geopolitics and political economy researcher

Fifty-one percent of Americans criticised the bill providing Ukraine with an additional $61 billion, according to a survey released on April 23 by Daily Express US. Yet, US President Joe Biden enthusiastically signed away this enormous amount of money to the financial black hole that Ukraine has become after the Senate approved it on the same day as the survey's release.

"The findings by the Washington DC based Democracy Institute in a survey of 1,500 voters has revealed that 51% disapprove of the decision to vote for the package by majority of Represenatives in Congress while only 39% support it," the outlet reported.

"The poll also reveals even stronger opposition to Joe Biden's rigid stance on the Ukraine war with 60% disapproving of his handling of the conflict while only 27% approve."

On April 20, almost six months after Biden first presented it, the US House of Representatives approved sending new military equipment and resources to Ukraine. Three hundred and eleven parliamentarians supported it, while 112 opposed it. On April 23, US Senators approved the bill by 79 votes in favour and 18 against.

Notably, the bill also contains measures to transfer frozen Russian sovereign assets to Ukraine.

It is recalled that at the start of Russia's special military operation in Ukraine in February 2022, the European Union and G7 members blocked almost half of Russian assets abroad, amounting to about €3 billion. Initially, the EU planned to spend the money stolen from Russia on the reconstruction of Ukraine, but then Brussels stated that, due to the difficult situation on the battlefield and the shortage of weapons and ammunition, the money could be spent on military support for Kiev.

Brussels has held off from these actions, but now that the US has legislated the illegal transfer of frozen Russian sovereign assets to Ukraine, the EU will undoubtedly soon follow, even if the EU's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on April 23 that the bloc is not going to seize frozen Russian assets for "the time being" due to the lack of clarity on legal issues in this regard.

In a call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on April 22, Biden assured that "his administration will quickly provide significant new security assistance packages to meet Ukraine's urgent battlefield and air defence needs." However, this is highly unlikely, considering more than $23 billion of the $61 billion is needed to rebuild the US' exhausted arsenals. Therefore, Kiev will receive very little from the so-called aid package, which is mostly on credit anyway.

The package is not similar to previous ones since it is based on a credit system, while the projected funds will be used for specific needs. At least $11 billion of the entire aid sum will be invested in financing ongoing US military operations in the region, and some $7.85 billion will be transferred for direct budget support to Kiev, excluding pension payments. About $14 billion will be allocated for weapon and military-related purchases.

Most of the money nominally allocated to Ukraine will remain in the US economy and military-industrial complex. Russian Defence Ministry Sergei Shoigu also highlighted this point on April 23.

"Washington intends to allocate almost $61 billion to the Kiev regime to prevent the collapse of the Ukrainian armed forces. Most of the allocations will finance the military industry of the United States. The US authorities cynically declare that Ukrainians will die for their interests in the fight against Russia," Shoigu said.

For his part, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that the US's new military aid package for Kiev would not change the situation on the battlefield and would only increase Ukraine's military losses. Such losses are proving devastating for the country, especially after the revelation by Shoigu that Ukraine has lost almost half a million soldiers since the beginning of the special military operation.

"In total, the losses of the Ukrainian armed forces amounted to almost half a million military personnel since the beginning of the special military operation," Shoigu said.

With the Ukrainian military suffering catastrophic casualty numbers and most Americans not supporting further aid, Biden reduces his chances of being re-elected in November by continuing this reckless policy, especially at a time when Donald Trump is leading in the polls and promising to end all support for Kiev. More importantly, supplying weapons to Ukraine does not contribute to the Russian-Ukrainian negotiations and will only have a negative effect as it prolongs the Ukrainian military's ability to continue a futile war.

4. More Russian Strikes Hit ISIS Cells In Central Syria (Videos)

More Russian Strikes Hit ISIS Cells In Central Syria (Videos)

Another wave of Russian airstrikes hit hideouts of ISIS cells in Syria's central region on April 26, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The London-based monitoring group said in a report that the airstrikes targeted the outskirts of the town of al-Sukhnah in the eastern Homs countryside, without providing any details on the losses sustained by ISIS. It's worth noting that al-Sukhnah was once a stronghold of the terrorist group.

Around a week earlier, at least 21 pro-government fighters from the Palestinian-led Quds Brigade were ambushed and killed by ISIS cells near al-Sukhan.

After the deadly ambush, the Syrian Arab Air Force and the Russian Aerospace Forces stepped up strikes against the terrorist group in the central region.

Videos posted to social networks in recent days showed some of the Syrian and Russian airstrikes that targeted the terrorists, including one that was reportedly carried out by a combat drone.

ISIS cells have been waging an insurgency in central Syria for most of the past decade. The terrorists receive support from their comrades in the northeastern region which is held by the United States and its proxy, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces.

In addition, Syrian and Russian officials have repeatedly accused U.S. forces in the southeastern area of al-Tanf of training and even arming militants, including members of ISIS.

5. Ukraine Withdrew American-Made Abrams Tanks From Front – Report

Ukraine Withdrew American-Made Abrams Tanks From Front - Report

Illustrative image.

Ukraine has pulled out American-made Abrams M1A1 SA main battle tanks from the front for the time being, The Associated Press reported on April 26.

The United States supplied Ukraine with 31 Abrams over the past year. Russian sources claim that at least a third of these tanks have already been destroyed or damaged. All the losses were near the city of Avdeevka in the Donetsk direction.

Two American military officials told the AP that the Ukrainian decision to pull out the Abrams from the front was the result of the excessive use of drones by the Russian military, which made it too difficult for the tanks to operate without detection or coming under attack.

The U.S. will work with the Ukrainians to reset tactics, Joint Chiefs of Staff Vice Chairman Adm. Christopher Grady and a third military official said.

"When you think about the way the fight has evolved, massed armor in an environment where unmanned aerial systems are ubiquitous can be at risk," Grady told the AP in an interview this week, adding that tanks are still important.

"Now, there is a way to do it," he said. "We'll work with our Ukrainian partners, and other partners on the ground, to help them think through how they might use that, in that kind of changed environment now, where everything is seen immediately."

While the American military officials who spoke to the AP said that Russian drones were the main threat facing Ukrainian Abrams tanks, many of the losses were in fact caused by anti-tank guided missiles. One kill was also attributed to a Russian T-72B3 main battle tank.

The performance of the Abrams in Ukraine was catastrophic to say the least. There were even reports about how much the Ukrainian struggled to just maintain and operate the tanks.

The U.S. will likely provide Ukraine with additional armor packages for the remaining Abrams tanks. However, this will not make any difference.

Despite the recent approval of $61 billion in aid to Ukraine, the U.S. may not provide more Abrams tanks to Kiev forces to avoid further embarrassment.

6. Israeli Killed Near Lebanon’s Border In Hezbollah Missile Ambush (Videos)

Israeli Killed Near Lebanon's Border In Hezbollah Missile Ambush (Videos)

Illustrative image.

An Israeli man was killed after Hezbollah ambushed late on April 25 a convoy of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in the occupied Lebanon Kfarchouba hills.

The convoy was targeted with guided missiles as well as rockets and artillery fire, Hezbollah said in a statement claiming responsibility for the ambush, adding that at least two vehicles were destroyed and that the IDF deployed a smoke screen to evacuate casualties.

The ambush was carried out to "to support the steadfast Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and in support of their brave and honorable resistance," the group noted.

Following the attack, the IDF said it struck Hezbollah sites in the southern Lebanese area of Shebaa, including a weapons depot and a rocket launcher, and additional sites in the towns of Markaba, Kfarchouba and Ain al- Tineh.

Hebrew media reported later that an Israeli man had died of wounds he sustained in the attack. The Walla News site said that the man was a truck driver from the Arab village of Ras al-Ein close to the Lebanese border. The slain man was most likely a contractor working for the IDF as there is a ban on the movement of civilians in Kfarchouba and other high-risk areas on the border.

Since the outbreak of the Israeli war on Gaza last October, Hezbollah and its allies began launching near-daily attacks against the IDF in support of the Hamas Movement and other Palestinian armed factions in the Strip.

The clashes on the Lebanese-Israeli border have so far resulted in nine civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of at least 11 IDF soldiers and reservists. On the Lebanese side, more than 400 people have been killed, including 269 fighters of Hezbollah and at least 70 civilians.

7. Houthis Attack Another Ship In Gulf Of Aden, Fire Missiles At Israel’s Eilat

Houthis Attack Another Ship In Gulf Of Aden, Fire Missiles At Israel's Eilat

Illustrative image.

The Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen announced on April 25 that they had attacked a commercial ship in the Gulf of Aden and fired missiles at the southernmost Israeli city of Eilat.

"We attacked the Israeli ship, MSC Darwin, in the Gulf of Aden with a number of naval missiles and drones, hitting it accurately," Houthi military spokesman Brigade General Yahya Sarea said in a televised statement. "We also launched a number of ballistic and winged missiles towards targets in the southern Israeli city of Eilat," he said.

The spokesman stressed that the Houthis will continue preventing all Israeli ships or those heading to Israel from transiting the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea, and the Indian Ocean.

"We emphasize that we will continue carrying out more attacks against targets in the Israeli city [Eilat]," Brig. Gen. Sarea added.

Before the statement, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, a detachment of the Royal Navy, reported on its website that it received a report of an attack 15 nautical miles southwest of Yemen's southern port city of Aden.

"The master reports a loud bang heard and a splash and smoke seen coming from the sea. The master reports the vessel and all crew are safe," the agency said, adding that "military authorities" were sent to the scene to provide support.

As for the attack on Eilat, Hebrew media didn't report any blasts or interceptions in the port city. There were also no statement from the United States Central Command.

The Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have attacked dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the U.S. and the UK in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden since last November in response to the Israeli war and siege on Gaza. In addition, the group carried out several drone and missile attacks against Eilat and shot down two U.S. combat drones.

Since January, the U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen in an attempt to deter the group. At least 37 people were killed and 30 others were wounded in these strikes. The Houthis responded by expanding their operations to include the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean.

The Russian military has captured an American-made M88A1 Recovery Vehicle from Kiev forces in the Donetsk direction.

Photos of the captured vehicles were posted to social networks on April 25. The vehicle was reportedly captured near the settlement of Stepovo, to the northwest of the city of Avdeevka, then pulled back to the rear by units from the Tsentr Group of Forces.

The M88A1 was designed around the now obsolete M60 Patton main battle tank. Its primary role is to repair or replace damaged parts in fighting vehicles while under fire, as well as extricate vehicles that have become bogged down or entangled.

The medium recovery vehicle, which weights 50,8 tone, has 432 mm ground clearance, 2.6 meter fording depth, 1.1 meter wall climb and 2.6 meters trench crossing capabilities. It is powered by an AVDS-1790-2DR V12, air-cooled Twin-turbo diesel engine and equipped with a winch and a spade. The vehicle is also armed with an M2 Browning .50 caliber machine gun with 1,300 rounds for self protection.

Kiev forces received at least eight M88A1 vehicles from the United States last year. Most of them have already been destroyed or damaged by the Russian military.

The U.S. and other allies of Ukraine have been struggling to supply Kiev forces with engineering vehicles for the recovery of damaged vehicles as well as to clear obstacles and minefields. The shortage and misuse of such vehicles contributed to the failure of the Ukrainian spring counteroffensive.

The M88A1 captured by the Russian military will likely end up on display at the Kubinka tank museum near the capital, Moscow, or some other military museum.

9. NATO Troops Start Pouring Into Ukraine

NATO Troops Start Pouring Into Ukraine

Click to see the full-size image

Written by Eric Zuesse

According to Stephen Bryen, whose extensive experience has been as a U.S. armaments-manufacturing high executive as well as in both the Executive and Legislative ends of the U.S. Government, headlined on April 25th, "NATO is starting to deploy Troops in Ukraine and Russia is Racing to Win", and he reported:

NATO is starting to deploy combat troops to Ukraine.  They are in uniform and mostly are concentrated in the western part of the country, although in some cases they are close to the actual fighting in the east.  Soldiers from Poland, France, the UK, Finland and other NATO members are arriving in larger numbers.  These troops are not mercenaries.  They wear the flag of their country on their shirts. …

The Biden administration, at least for public consumption, says it opposes sending NATO soldiers to Ukraine. But the truth is, Biden may be waiting for his reelection before he gives the order for US soldiers to fight in Ukraine.  After Biden is reelected, he will have a free hand.  The recent passage of the $60 billion air bill for Ukraine signals that Congress will go along with whatever the Biden administration wants to do "fighting the Russians." …

Meanwhile NATO is far behind Russia, both in weapons, manpower and industrial might. Furthermore, stockpiles of weapons are very low and equipment supposedly for national defense has been sent to Ukraine, leaving defenses wanting.

The consensus opinion in the US National Security establishment is that Ukraine is losing its war with the Russians and could potentially face the collapse of its army. …

NATO's plan seems to be to try and ward off disaster by filling in gaps in Ukraine's forces by importing "advisers," waiting for the US to commit its army to the battle after the election in November.  The Russians know this and are in a race to try and collapse Ukraine's army before Biden returns to office, if in fact he does.  If the Russians are successful, a bigger war in Europe will be avoided.  If not, with the introduction of US forces, Europe will be plunged into World War III.

And so too would the U.S.

In short: Ukraine's war against Russia will soon be a war between Russia and all of these NATO member-nations, not merely against Ukraine.

This will force the issue, because any negotiated end to this war has thereby become impossible: the end of this conflict will be either a U.S.-and-'allied' victory and a Russian defeat (so unlikely as to be virtually impossible), or else a Russian victory and a crushing defeat of the entire U.S. empire (leading ultimately to a collapse in the value of the dollar and the bankruptcy of the U.S. Government).

Investigative historian Eric Zuesse's latest book, AMERICA'S EMPIRE OF EVIL: Hitler's Posthumous Victory, and Why the Social Sciences Need to Change, is about how America took over the world after World War II in order to enslave it to U.S.-and-allied billionaires. Their cartels extract the world's wealth by control of not only their 'news' media but the social 'sciences' — duping the public.
