5G Exposed

Patricia Burke – Aug 18, 19, 20 EMF TECH and UTILITY NEWS

This week, although the show was about Alice, in the last few minutes starting at about 2:14 they revisit Atlanisi, neuralinks, Mars, Elon Musk etc….

She predicts that there will be a polarization with smart cites and synthetic reality vs. homesteading communities, Waldorf schools, and biodynamic gardening for the next 40 years, for the last 15 minutes of the video.

It was comforting to me to see a very informed community of over 15,000 from another corner of the planet agreeing that 5G is undesirable.

The free on-line 5G summit that begins next week has already released 3 lectures:

with Patrick Wood of Technocracy Rising, Devra Davis, And Robert Kennedy.

AI: How State Politics Is Playing a Huge Role in Artificial Intelligence: Eye on A.I.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed legislation in late July to create a temporary state commission that will examine how artificial intelligence impacts his state.

In doing so, New York joined Vermont and Washington in establishing an A.I. task force that will examine the cutting-edge technology and then make recommendations about how it should be regulated. The groups vary in their mission, but the general message is the same: companies pushing A.I., the brains behind innovation like robotics and facial recognition software, can’t necessarily be trusted to do what’s in the best interest of state residents.

CELLPHONESEditorial: These staggering numbers show the need for responsible driving  Car crashes since 2000 have injured more than 30 million Americans and taken the lives of 624,000 — a number exceeding the 535,000 U.S. military personnel killed in the two World Wars. The central causes aren’t a surprise: Speeding. Drunkenness. Driver distraction via cellphones or other diversions. Drunken driving cost more than 212,000 Americans their lives during 2000-17, the Washington Post reports. The death toll from speeding exceeded 197,000 during that period. Distracted driving, meanwhile, led to crashes resulting in more than 77,000 deaths since 2000. Some 481,000 Americans use their cellphones while at the wheel during daylight hours, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says.

CELLPHONES: The Smartphone Revolution Was the Android Revolution

Android has come with downsides, of course, for its key triumvirate and the rest of the world. The same qualities that made internet-connected mobile devices so thrilling for more than a decade—eliminating gatekeepers, making information instantaneous, and connecting people with different points of view—now feel threatening to democracy, public safety, and our mental health. Samsung and other Android partners have also increasingly sought to free themselves from Google by pushing their own apps or software features ahead of those in the standard Android bundles. And for Google parent Alphabet Inc., Android’s legacy has grown messy. Last year, after a long investigation, European Union regulators declared that Google’s offering Android for free but with strings attached was a violation of EU anti-monopoly laws. The EU also fined Google for favoring its web shopping service ahead of rivals and for hurting competition in internet search ads. The company is appealing all three actions.

FCC: Lawmakers urge the FCC to seek public input on T-Mobile / Sprint merger

They’re asking the commission to delay voting on the deal.

FCC: FCC declares 5G safe, 5G devices hit 100, Beijing wants 10,000 base stations

The speed of 5G news is impossible to track, so we get you up to date on the latest highlights.

  • After the FCC ruled 5G technology safe last week, it moved this week to greenlight the $26.5 billion merger between Sprint and T-Mobilewith a supportive draft order. FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said it “will bring fast 5G wireless service to many more Americans and help close the digital divide in rural areas.” All the same, the FCC got slapped back when a federal court ruled that the agency couldn’t bypass environmental regulations on 5G small cell sites. It’s a win for residents like those in Costa Mesa, California, this week who are still concerned over health risks. Where’s the concern coming from? Thedebate over 5G radiation.

FCC deems cellphones with 5G tech safe

In a new proposal, the FCC concludes current radio frequency emission levels are OK.

Costa Mesa Residents Air Concerns Over 5G Towers

The Commission failed to justify its determination that it is not in the public interest to require review of small cell deployments. We therefore grant the petitions in part because the Order’s deregulation of small cells is arbitrary and capricious. The Commission did not adequately address the harms of deregulation or justify its portrayal of those harms as negligible. In light of its mischaracterization of small cells’ footprint, the scale of deployment it anticipates, the many expedients already in place for low-impact wireless construction, and the Commission’s decades-long history of carefully tailored review, the FCC’s characterization of the Order as consistent with its longstanding policy was not “logical and rational.”

The case has now been remanded to the FCC and the Tribes look forward to participating in that process.

The Native American Rights Fund and Greenberg Traurig LLP represent the Blackfeet Tribe, Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana, Fort Belknap Indian Community, Rosebud Sioux Tribe, Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, and USET (United Southern and Eastern Tribes, Inc.) in the case.

5G and the FCC: 10 Reasons Why You Should Care

5G5th Generation Wireless: Isn’t It Time for Us to Have a Say?

Imagine that you are awakened one morning to the sound of a telecommunications company installing a huge metal pole at the curb in front of the carefully sculpted desert landscaping that is your front yard. You rush out to protest only to be told that they have the right to put in the enormous eyesore on the city-owned right-of way because Tucson is becoming a “smart city” by making 5G broadly accessible. Later, at the ward office of your City Council member, staffers shrug their shoulders saying that the matter is out of their hands. The Federal Communications Commission has issued policies that preempt local control over where antennas and towers can be sited with the aim of accelerating 5G deployment. Not only that, but in 2017 Arizona became the first state in the nation to pass legislation echoing the FCC and putting control of our streets and neighborhoods in the hands of giant telecommunications companies. – Elizabeth Kelly

“ARPANSA is aware that there is a lot of concerning misinformation circulating throughout the community about the possible impacts of Australia’s planned roll-out of the 5G mobile network,” it says.

“Contrary to some claims, there are no established health effects from the radio waves that the 5G network uses.

“This network currently runs on radio waves similar to those used in the current 4G network and, in the future, will use radio waves with higher frequencies. It is important to note that higher frequencies do not mean higher or more intense exposure. Higher frequency radio waves are already used in security screening units at airports, police radar guns to check speed, remote sensors and in medicine. These uses have been thoroughly tested and found to have no negative impacts on human health.”

5G: Sprint and Nokia Fall Behind on 5G Launch Plans

Sprint and Nokia are scrambling to get 5G service up and running in America’s most populated cities after missing their deadline to launch commercial service in New York City, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Washington, D.C. by the end of July.

The markets, which include three of America’s five most populous cities, are also Sprint’s first 5G markets to use equipment from Nokia. The network operator, which is in a bit of a holding pattern as it waits to finalize its merger with T-Mobile US, beat its previous deadline to launch 5G service in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, and Kansas City before the end of May, and it followed that with a 5G launch in Chicago that can cover up to 700,000 people.

Sprint’s first handful of 5G markets are riding on equipment from Ericsson and Samsung. Nokia, which declined to comment for this story, appears to be causing delays in New York City, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Washington, D.C.

Sprint is in the final stages of testing with Nokia in the four markets and anticipates commercial availability before the end of the month, a spokesperson told SDxCentral. The operator declined to comment on the reason for the delay, other than to say it’s only a matter of days or weeks — not months — before the 5G service will be live.

PCMag and Light Reading previously reported on Sprint’s 5G delays.

OTHER TELECOM: 2020 DEMOCRATS MAKE PLAY FOR RURAL BROADBAND VOTE — Several Demoratic contenders including Biden, Warren and Buttigieg have rolled out proposals for tens of billions in new federal dollars to bring fast broadband service to rural America, with Warren’s $85 billion plan leading the spending pack, John reports for POLITICO. They are attempting to offer President Donald Trump’s rural supporters a reason to turn against him in 2020. “I see that the country of Iceland has all hooked up, and we’re not,” Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), one candidate who raised the issue recently on Democrats’ debate stage, told John.

— The Trump 2020 campaign fired back, touting its record relying more on deregulation and streamlining rather than the burst of capital investment that Trump once envisioned rolling into a $1 trillion infrastructure package: “While Democrats are picking numbers out of the sky, conveniently as they descend on Iowa, President Trump has been busy delivering real results.” Yet even some top congressional Republicans such as Senate Broadband Caucus co-chair Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) acknowledged frustration this year over the government’s scattershot efforts to close the digital divide. “We’ve still got too far to go, so I get impatient with it,” she told John of what she called “just small steps. –politico

OTHER TELECOM: Amazon executives gave campaign contributions to the head of congressional antitrust probe two months before July hearing

  • Starting in late May, five senior executives from Amazon made individual contributions to Rep. David Cicilline, who’s leading the House antitrust investigation into major tech companies.
  • The donations serve as an example of how companies and executives work behind-the-scenes to cozy up to lawmakers to advance their corporate interests.
  • Experts say these political contributions by corporate executives are common, but its effectiveness remains questionable

Just two months before lawmakers grilled executives from AmazonAppleFacebook, and Google at a hearing held as part of a broader antitrust probe, some of Amazon’s top executives made donations to the chair of the subcommittee leading the investigation. Over a three-week period starting in late May, five senior executives from Amazon made individual contributions to Rep. David Cicilline, the Democrat from Rhode Island who’s leading the House antitrust investigation into major tech companies, public filings show. Cicilline became the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee’s Antitrust, Commercial and Administrative Law Subcommittee in January, when Democrats regained control of the House. The executives include Amazon’s CEO of worldwide consumer Jeff Wilke, CFO Brian Olsavsky, general counsel David Zapolsky, SVP of worldwide operations Dave Clark, and SVP of North America consumer Doug Herrington. They all contributed the max $2,800 allowed, except for Olsavsky, who donated $1,500.

OTHER TELECOM: Josh Hawley Says Tech Enables ‘Some of the Worst of America’  From social media addiction to antitrust regulation, the freshman senator from Missouri wants to take on Big Tech in big ways.

The business of Big Tech has been front and center in the 116th Congress, and unlike in years past, now many Republicans are some of the loudest voices calling for change. Chief among this new breed of would-be Silicon Valley reformers is freshman GOP senator Josh Hawley, of Missouri, who has turned progressive and conservative heads alike with some of the sweeping actions he’s proposed since being seated in January.

Just last month the 39-year-old dropped legislation aimed at curbing Americans’ compulsion to keep checking our screens for likes and retweets. The Social Media Addiction Reduction Technology Act seeks to block companies like Facebook and Twitter from having product features like infinite scroll on users’ feeds or YouTube’s autoplay feature—which always has more content queued up. And in June, Hawley introduced a bill that would force large tech companies to be audited for “politically biased moderation practices” before qualifying for protections under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act—a controversial measure that has been roundly criticized by tech organizations, a number of Democrats, and even some Republicans.

HEALTH: Iodine – The Universal & Holistic Super Mineral (Dr. G. Cousins)

18) Iodine is needed with the use of cordless phones, cell phones and now smart meters to prevent hypothyroidism.

A recent study published in the International Journal of Radiation Biology, Vol. 86, No. 12, December 2010, pp.1106-1116, shows that pulsed 900MHz radiation, a frequency range emitted by cordless phones, cell phones, and now the new “smart” meters being quickly deployed throughout the world by utility companies, induces hypothyroidism. Hypothyroid is also considered a precursor to, and a common condition also associated with, cancer, diabetes, and heart disease, which are all major killers today.

Pulse Modulated RF Fields and the Thyroid Gland

Pulse modulated 900 MHz radiation induces hypothyroidism and apoptosis in thyroid cells: A light, electron microscopy and immunohistochemical study

Results: Morphological analyses revealed hypothyrophy of the gland in the 900 MHz RF exposure group. The results indicated that thyroid hormone secretion was inhibited by the RF radiation. In addition, we also observed formation of apoptotic bodies and increased caspase-3 and caspase-9 activities in thyroid cells of the rats that were exposed to modulated RF fields.

Conclusion: The overall findings indicated that whole body exposure to pulse-modulated RF radiation that is similar to that emitted by global system for mobile communications (GSM) mobile phones can cause pathological changes in the thyroid gland by altering the gland structure and enhancing caspase-dependent pathways of apoptosis.

PRIVACY: Cherish Your Privacy? New Anti-Surveillance Clothes Trick Cameras by Making You Look Like a Car

PRIVACYPeople Are Starting to Realize How Voice Assistants Actually Work

The secrecy surrounding AI products makes even basic information about them a scandal.

On Tuesday, Bloomberg reported that hundreds of Facebook contractors listened to and transcribed voice clips from messages users spoke aloud to the Messenger app. Their job was to ensure the AI-generated transcripts matched the audio. Facebook says that the clips were anonymized and none of the users were identifiable.

“Much like Apple and Google, we paused human review of audio more than a week ago,” a Facebook company spokesperson said in an emailed statement to The Atlantic.

It might sound scandalous when combined with Facebook’s many concurrent privacy cataclysms, and the company’s recent foray into in-home camera systems. But among tech companies, hiring humans to review clips of conversations between devices and their users is routine. Apple tasked contractors with transcribing audio clips Siri overheard, then ended the program earlier this month after it became public. Microsoft contractors transcribed users’ out-loud interactions with Skype Translate. Google contractors transcribed commands spoken to Google Assistant. Amazon contractors transcribed the demands users made of Alexa.

Because the complex of AI tools and human review exists in this feedback loop, the stakes only get higher as companies improve voice assistants, asking us to embed them deeper into daily life. Amazon has patented technology that would allow its speakers to assess users’ emotional states and adjust their responses accordingly. Google filed a patent that would enable its speakers to respond to the sounds of users brushing their teeth and eating. Voice assistants are already being tested in police stationsclassrooms, and hospitals.

The effect is that our tools will know more and more about us as we know less and less about them. In a recent article for The New Yorker on the risks of automation, the Harvard professor Jonathan Zittrain coined the phrase intellectual debt: the phenomenon by which we readily accept new technology into our lives, only bothering to learn how it works after the fact. Essentially, buy first, ask questions later. This is the second feedback loop grinding onward alongside the first, a sort of automation-procrastination complex. As voice assistants become an integral part of health care and law enforcement, we accrue more intellectual debt in more aspects of life. As technology gets smarter, we will know less about it.

The past two years have seen an increase not just in smart technology, but in calls for overhauling user privacy. As a result, privacy has become somewhat of a deflection tactic in the tech industry. As part of marketing strategies, Facebook, Google, and Amazon have claimed that they protect our privacy, even as they record users while they have sex or speak with their doctors. Facebook promised to turn over a new leaf in the aftermath of the Cambridge Analytica scandal and CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s evasive, unsatisfying Capitol Hill testimony. Apple even made privacy part of its 2019 marketing campaign: “Privacy. That’s

iPhone.” But privacy alone won’t solve this. It’s just as important for consumers to know how our devices work to begin with

A correspondent writes after received my latest news bulletin 14 Aug 2019

Hi I admire and respect the work you do.

Let me add something me and my daughter talked about. We talked about the phrase “electric sensitivity ” which is the way the politicians and others name or frame the issue of the fact that they want to not accept that radiation from cell phones, towers, antennas, smart meters and 5g is damaging to us all. (About) the sensitivity we actually all have … a lot of people just haven’t realized what is causing their health problems. In Denmark 50% of the population have problems that force them to take precautions every day. That is 3 million people. (I think this is a little high – Ed.)
Just the thought…….so I hope I could be of some help.  We think that we should bury the phrase and talk about the danger of the radiation in another way.  We propose ” radiation” . My best wishes for us all. Ulla

The Third Industrial Revolution: A Radical New Sharing Economy 1 ¾ hours

Published on Feb 13, 2018

The global economy is in crisis. The exponential exhaustion of natural resources, declining productivity, slow growth, rising unemployment, and steep inequality, forces us to rethink our economic models. Where do we go from here? In this feature-length documentary, social and economic theorist Jeremy Rifkin lays out a road map to usher in a new economic system.
A Third Industrial Revolution is unfolding with the convergence of three pivotal technologies: an ultra-fast 5G communication internet, a renewable energy internet, and a driverless mobility internet, all connected to the Internet of Things embedded across society and the environment.
This 21st century smart digital infrastructure is giving rise to a radical new sharing economy that is transforming the way we manage, power and move economic life. But with climate change now ravaging the planet, it needs to happen fast. Change of this magnitude requires political will and a profound ideological shift.

FCC: FCC Authorizes $121 Million In Rural Broadband Funding In 16 States

Public Notice  |  Federal Communications Commission Description: https://ci4.googleusercontent.com/proxy/f2egfHXUhWEE1JF3ZuKB3OkMv2zao5Owfc_frWFUt8J7ig0J-iqexO9-pOZQN3WqQmo8B4k8cbrlUWlewjnKQMgZ8xOUI7HO-i8f3g8G0kXpl6xo5Q=s0-d-e1-ft#https://www.benton.org/sites/default/files/external-link-small.png

The Federal Communications Commission authorized over $121 million in funding over the next decade to expand broadband to 36,579 unserved rural homes and businesses in 16 states, representing the fourth wave of support from 2018’s successful Connect America Fund Phase II auction. The FCC has already authorized three waves of funding in May, June, and July. Aug 12’s action brings total authorized funding to over $924 million, expanding connectivity to 342,097 homes and businesses; additional rounds will be authorized in the coming months. Funding applications approved by the FCC Aug 12 include:

  • Northern Arapaho Tribal Industries, which is owned by the Northern Arapaho Tribe, is receiving $4.1 million to deploy service to 849 homes and businesses on the Wind River Reservation in WY, all of which will get access to service delivering Gigabit speeds
  • Tri-Co Connections is receiving $32.3 million to deploy Gigabit service to over 7,015 homes and businesses in rural PA over its fiber network
  • Midcontinent Communications is receiving $39 million to deploy service to 9,371 homes and businesses in rural MN, ND, and SD, all of which will get service delivering speeds of at least 100 Mbps downstream/20 Mbps upstream
  • Citynet West Virginia will receive $6.5 million over the next decade to deliver Gigabit service over its fiber network to 898 homes and businesses in rural WV

FCC: Keetoowahs lead successful challenge to FCC rule

A Tahlequah-based tribe triumphed in its challenge of a Federal Communications Commission rule found by a federal appeals court to have circumvented historic preservation and environmental laws.

The United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians led the legal challenge to the rule that would have exempted from tribal consultation provisions the siting of small cell towers. The rule was adopted in March 2018 in an effort to modernize “wireless infrastructure regulations” and facilitate “network densification” and the expansion of 5G networks.

“Those financial incentives are gone, and we expect our fee restrictions to continue greatly diminishing unnecessary and costly delays,” Carr said. “I’m also pleased that the court affirmed our accelerated timelines for reviews. Already, these reforms have resulted in significant new builds.”

It is unclear as of press time if the ruling was retroactive in respect to any consulting fees for projects that had yet to be paid to tribes before the case made its way into court.

“When we consulted we sent a crew of qualified people out, so we were earning our money. It made a tremendous economic impact on our tribe,” said UKB Assistant Chief Jamie Thompson, who has also been heavily involved in the case. “Therefore, I hope that these inspections can be retroactive because we have documented every one that came through since this case started and since our funding was shut off. We’ve completed them, we just haven’t been paid for them.”

FCC: US court hampers FCC small cell plan

US judges delivered a blow to a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) plan to cut red tape around the deployment of small cells, ruling installations could not bypass environmental and historical preservation reviews.

A US appeals court, which had been considering proposals designed to speed-up deployment of technology deemed vital to 5G networks, concluded: “The Commission failed to justify its confidence that small cell deployments pose little-to-no cognisable religious, cultural or environmental risk, particularly given the vast number of proposed deployments”.

The judges did, however, pass several provisions in the FCC’s wider proposal. These included clauses preventing parties demanding upfront fees before reviewing proposed sites, and an accelerated timeline for reviews. Some elements of the FCC’s plans were not addressed in the case.

5G Crackdown? AUGUST 13, 2019 ACTION ITEM

More and more concerned citizens are asking tough questions about the safety of 5G wireless networks. Are big tech companies trying to quash their dissent? Action Alert!

Over the last few months, we’ve been reporting on the planned deployment of 5G wireless networks and some of the health and safety issues that are being swept under the rug by telecom companies and their enthusiasts in the government. Some communities, like Sacramento, California, have already seen the installation of “small cell” towers near homes. When activists in Sacramento started speaking out, it appears as though YouTube and other sites have silenced their criticisms of 5G.

Noah Davidson, an activist in Sacramento, noticed his young nieces started experiencing health problems after Verizon installed a small cell just 45 feet from their home. Other members of the community also started experiencing adverse effects after small cells were installed. Davidson has worked to start a grassroots movement to raise awareness about 5G in the community and to work with telecom companies to establish an opt-out program for those who do not want 5G in their neighborhood.

In so doing, it appears as though Davidson has incurred the wrath of the Internet censors. His account wasapparently suspended, without explanation, by YouTube. One of the two videos on his YouTube account was footage of Sacramento activists speaking at a city council meeting. This seems deeply suspicious. YouTube is owned by Google, a company that we know is aggressively censoring content on dubious grounds. It doesn’t seem outlandish to conclude that Google and YouTube are quashing dissent about a technology they want to see implemented across the United States.

Activists are not the only ones advising us to pump the breaks on 5G. A group of hundreds of scientists from around the world recently sent a letter to the United Nations and the World Health Organization warning of “serious concerns regarding the ubiquitous and increasing exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) generated by electric and wireless devices.” The scientists explain that EMF “affects living organisms at levels well below most international guidelines,” causing increased cancer risk, cellular stress, increase in free radicals, genetic damage, changes to the reproductive system, learning and memory deficits, and neurological disorders.

We must keep speaking out about this crucial public health issue in defiance of the censors and the crony capitalists railroading us into accepting this technology with no questions asked.

Our previous articles have covered some of the other dangers associated with 5G networks. For example, 5G utilizes millimeter waves—a shorter wavelength than the current 4G networks in use. Millimeter wavelengths have been used in crowd control devices that shoot high-powered millimeter waves that make the target feel like their skin is burning. Other research has shown that our sweat ducts can act like antennas for the shorter millimeter waves, meaning we absorb more of this energy into our bodies.

Keep in mind that we will be exposed to EMF generated by wireless devices on an unprecedented scale for two reasons. First, short millimeter waves cannot travel as far as longer waves, which is why many more “small cell” units must be installed to create a 5G network. Some neighborhoods would see dozens of small cells installed, all of them emitting microwave radiation. Second, the sheer number of wireless devices will increase. More and more systems are becoming wireless, or will become reliant on wireless technology. “Smart cities” will use wireless networks to collect and analyze data about the environment, traffic, water, transit, lighting, waste management, security, and parking. Millimeter-wave-emitting devices will saturate our environment, and the fact that we’re plunging head-first into deploying this technology without knowing the health consequences is shocking.

Action Alert! Write to the FCC and Congress, urging them to stop the spread of 5G until its safety can be determined. Please send your message immediately.

5G: 4G, fake 5G and real 5G – know the differences

What is of particular interest here is the situation in Spain and most notably Australia: who have obviously invested heavily in the latest 4G LTE CA/MIMO/QAM enabled infrastructure in that they are getting 950Mbps or almost 1Gbps download speeds on 4G LTE which is higher than their 5G implementation which is yielding 792Mbps.  Both 4G and 5G speeds are significantly higher than that of the UK and in Spain they have virtual parity between 4G and 5G in terms of performance.  All of this strongly indicates that the fake 5G implementation in all areas outside of the US are in fact essentially using 4G LTE technology and just re-badging it as 5G.  This is something of a rip-off for UK consumers as they could have easily just updated the 4G LTE network to get the same or better speeds than with 5G without customers having to update phones and contracts.  If the government were genuinely interested in fast mobile broadband they could have made additional spectrum available for 4G LTE in the sub-6Ghz ranges and left any future 5G roll-out in the highly controversial mmWave spectrum where it belongs.

This confusion between fake 5G and real 5G is open to gross abuse and manipulation by the telcoms.  For instance there is a rapidly growing public movement against the roll out of real 5G across the world, but in the UK and Europe at least, because what is being launched is really 4G LTE with additional spectrum in the sub-6Ghz range then there will not be any significant changes to any health or environmental risks and there is a chance the protest will appear to be a great big nothing burger and conspiracy theory.  That will place us in a dangerous situation because after the unsuccessful protests against fake 5G, the real 5GmmWave  tech will be rolled out at a later date and when that happens the public will have already used up a lot of its credibility in protesting the roll out of fake 5G.   That’s not to say that aggressive use of Carrier Aggregation, Massive MIMO and QAM might not make 4G masts and phones far more dangerous.  We need to take extensive readings from out existing 4G networks and then compare them to the new Fake 5G masts as they are rolled out.

We need to be measuring, questioning and examining our increased use of wireless technologies in general and these are things that we urgently need to address, but the public also need to be quite clear about the precise nature of their concerns and demonstrate that they are fully aware of the differences in technologies being put forward and the different kind of threats that they pose.  We can’t run the risk of crying wolf against a more benign technology if it will leave us with less credibility when it comes to resisting the more dangerous forms of high frequency mmWave 5G which will be coming to the UK and Europe within the next two to three years.

5G TECHNET WADES INTO 5G FIGHT OVER DEFENSE BILL — Trade group TechNet, which counts AT&T and Verizon among members, is sounding the alarm over language in the Senate defense bill, S. 1790, ordering the Defense Department to create a test-bed program for “innovative technologies and techniques to facilitate” spectrum sharing between 5G service providers and incumbent airwaves occupants. As John reported last month , wireless heavyweights view this language as a Pentagon power grab over 5G and are lobbying to strip it from the bill before the House and Senate settle on a consensus version. “Granting this new authority to DOD would mark a significant policy shift by the federal government,” TechNet wrote congressional negotiators Monday, noting that the FCC traditionally oversees private-sector use of American airwaves. _AXIOS

IOTIssues To Keep In Mind When Disposing Of IoT Devices

“Privacy leaks in smart devices: Extracting data from used smart home devices,” is research recently shared at a gathering of security experts. According to Voxy, the research found that consumers are not properly wiping away the data stored on IoT devices when they dispose of them. This data can include things like WiFi credentials and user information. It can also include information pertaining to the certain device and how it was used. For example, vacuum cleaning robot store maps of the routes they take during cleaning, the history of their cleaning practices and log files.

One of those involved in the research, Dennis Giese, a cyber researcher and doctoral student, found that the majority of IoT devices have poor factory reset procedures. He says that when a user implements a factory reset of their device before recycling or selling the device, that majority of that data will stay on the device more times than not.

HEALTH RF: The Austrian Parliament asks for evaluation of 5G and health – do not hold your breath

Reading description of this project, available on the website of the Institute of Technology Assessment of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, provides the proverbial “bucket of cold water”.

It appears that the “evaluation” will likely be nothing new but recap of the existing mantra:

“…In a first step, an inventory of current expert opinions of international aggregators such as the WHO and exemplary national committees will be compiled. These are presented in such a way that the respective areas of validity (which mobile communication generation etc.) are identified. In a second step, the corresponding meta-studies of these internationally recognized and scientifically high-ranking committees on the health consequences of EMF will be summarized taking into account different levels of evidence (verification, evidence, hypotheses, ambiguous findings, gaps in knowledge).…”

his means that the “new analysis” will just reanalyze what “WHO and exemplary national committees” already said. Interestingly, the description does not mention ICNIRP, the most powerful influencer that one would expect to be singled out as an “exemplary” committee. After all, the mentioned WHO is “the front” for the ICNIRP opinions.

In summary, it seems that the “Austrian Parliament’s enterprise” will be nothing new. No new analysis of the science on 5G radiation and health. Just re-packaging of the same old ICNIRP-mantra.

Update based on information from Prof. Mosgoeller

The overview of the project presented above indeed does not mention any specific organization besides the WHO. However, in the workpackages of the project, there is a more detailed description of what organizations are considered as “exemplary national committees” or “internationally recognized and scientifically high-ranking committees“. These include the same old “culprits”: ICNIRP, SCENIHR, BfS and the already defunct AGNIR.

POLITICS INTERNATIONAL US vs. CHINA: All signs point to a decades-long cold war with China, one reshaping global alliances, politics and economies, Axios CEO Jim VandeHei reports.

  • Why it matters: The trade war is but a very small skirmish in a much bigger and wider battle for global dominance. It’s easier to see this cold war turn hot than turn off. And, for the first time, you can see the possibility of China and America decoupling — creating two distinct, rival global systems and power structures.

The big picture: Beyond trade, the two superpowers are competing on intellectual property and technological mastery, political influence across the developing world via economic assistance (China’s Belt and Road Initiative), diplomatic agreements, multinational institutions (Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank) and military sales (missiles, subs, drones, training).

  • Collectively, this translates to a competition of political systems — a new Cold War.
  • One of the clearest manifestations of this is in tech: The internet is “splitting in two,” as The Wall Street Journal put it, and giant companies from the U.S. and China are racing for advantages, hidden and overt, around the world.

Between the lines … Bill Bishop of Sinocism tells me that President Xi Jinping and his team have concluded that China is far too reliant on the U.S. for technology and agriculture.

  • So they have accelerated efforts to become self-sufficient, while also diversifying their reliance away from the U.S.
  • Even if there is a trade deal, that shift will not reverse.

Now, China is blaming Washington for its own economic and internal strains:

  • The N.Y. Times reports from Beijing that “hostility toward America,” by Chinese officials and state-run news organizations, “has escalated … in tandem with two of China’s big problems: a slowing economy complicated by trade tensions and turbulence in Hong Kong that has no end in sight.”
  • “Beijing also does not appear to see an end to its differences with Washington over the Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei, which was blacklisted by the Trump administration as a security threat,” The Times added.

What’s next: In November, it’ll be 30 years since the Berlin Wall fell on Nov. 9, 1989. For most of that time, the U.S. had no real rival for global supremacy. Now, America is in a fight it could lose.

  • “All roads used to lead to Rome. Now they lead to Beijing,” Oxford professor of global history Peter Frankopan writes in “The New Silk Roads,” out in March.
  • “We are living in the Asian century already.”

The bottom line: The U.S. lost its way after the Cold War, creating a crossroads similar to the one after World War II: a multi-decade civilizational struggle.

Tesla has never published monthly sales data, and even its quarterly reports don’t break out sales by country. Ford Motor Company and GM stopped publishing monthly sales data last year, switching to quarterly reports. And this was the first month in which Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) ceased its monthly sales reports, not giving any insight into what happened with its various brands in July.

Brands covered by Ford Motor Company, GM, and FCA include: Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Ford, Lincoln, Jeep, Ram, and Alfa Romeo. That’s right — we no longer have monthly sales data for any of those automobile brands.

An all-star team of transpo bigwigs had just one meeting before the DOT went radio silent

The Trump administration quietly terminated an Obama-era federal committee on automation in transportation earlier this year, the Department of Transportation confirmed to The Verge this week. What’s more, the DOT never informed some members that the advisory group didn’t exist anymore, including Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, Zipcar founder Robin Chase, Apple vice president Lisa Jackson, and even the committee’s own vice chair, The Verge has learned.

The committee’s dissolution comes at a critical moment in the development of automated vehicles in the United States. During the two-plus years that it sat dormant, multiplecompanies have rolled out small commercial fleets of automated vehicles that perform a variety of tasks. Big money is pouring into some of the most visible companies in the space. And there’s been a human cost, too: one of Uber’s prototype autonomous vehicleskilled a pedestrian in Arizona in 2018, and at least two people were killed while using Tesla’s Autopilot suite of driver assistance systems.

Since 2014, the CPUC has been part of a group of state and local agencies to support the development of the Energy Atlas, a geospatial analytical tool developed by UCLA’s California Center for Sustainable Communities Institute of the Environment. The Energy Atlas is the largest set of disaggregated energy data in the nation, and uses energy consumption data at the building level, combined with public records, to reveal previously undetectable patterns about how people, buildings and cities use energy. The tool helps regional planners and decision makers more effectively target energy program interventions and develop policies to mitigate and prepare for climate change. Originally limited in scope to Los Angeles County, CPUC Decision (D.)18-05-041 (Ordering Paragraph 32) directs the utilities to expand the Energy Atlas to all IOU territories statewide.101. 102

The Silicon Valley-based company is struggling to achieve something no publicly traded fuel cell maker has yet accomplished: an annual profit.

The company has also been under scrutiny for misrepresenting its financial status in public statements. In November 2018, Axios revealed that Bloom’s IPO filing and first quarterly earnings report had failed to mention an expected $100 million to $150 million cost to replace many of the fuel cells making up its 30-megawatt fleet for Delmarva Power in Delaware, its largest deployment. Bloom’s response stated that the incremental cost for replacing the systems would be covered by future savings.

FEATURED: Why We Need Stronger Cell Phone Radiation Regulations:

Key Testimony Submitted to the FCC

Electromagnetic Radiation Safety

August 12, 2019

On August 8, 2019, the FCC published a news release in which Ajit Pai, the FCC chairperson, issued a proposal that the FCC not change its existing radiofrequency (RF) exposure limits. He also proposed to gather public comment on rules to determine compliance with the exposure limits and establish uniform guidelines to ensure compliance.
The press release makes the following claims:

“The FCC sets radiofrequency limits in close consultation with the FDA and other health agencies. After a thorough review of the record and consultation with these agencies, we find it appropriate to maintain the existing radiofrequency limits, which are among the most stringent in the world for cell phones,” said Julius Knapp, chief of the FCC’s Office of Engineering and Technology.
As Jeffrey Shuren, Director of the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health, wrote to the FCC, “[t]he available scientific evidence to date does not support adverse health effects in humans due to exposures at or under the current limits…” and “[n]o changes to the current standards are warranted at this time.”
Unfortunately, these assertions do not reflect the state of the scientific literature regarding RF health effects, nor do they adequately reflect the public comment received by the FCC over the past six years regarding RF exposure limits for Proceeding Number 13-84.
The FCC has no health expertise and relies upon Federal health agencies, especially the FDA, for advice about RF exposure limits. However, these agencies have lacked the requisite expertise to provide this guidance as their RF health experts retired or took industry jobs. In the past decade, these agencies have failed to monitor the vast and growing body of peer-reviewed research that documents adverse health effects from low-intensity exposure to radiofrequency radiation. Rather, the Federal government has increasingly relied upon advice from engineers and scientists with conflicts of interest and industry lobbyists.

For an index of key submissions to the FCC regarding RF exposure limits and RF health effects since mid-2012, go to:

ANTENNAS AND TOWERS Helios Towers mulls listing at possible USD 3 bln valuation – report Monday 12 August 2019 | 09:25 CET | News

Helios Towers is reviving plans for an initial public offering, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Its advisers are resuming preparations for an IPO that could value Helios at about USD 3 billion and it is considering filing for the share sale as soon as this year, they said. The tower owner is weighing London and Johannesburg as listing venues, though it has not made a final decision, one of the people said.

In March 2018, Helios announced its intention to carry out an IPO in London and Johannesburg to let shareholders such as Soros Fund Management reduce their stakes. It quickly abandoned the plans with little explanation, saying two weeks later its owners had decided against a listing despite receiving “considerable interest” from potential investors.

Any deal would add to the USD 1.8 billion of IPOs by telecommunications-related companies this year, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Helios was one of a number of tower owners, including fellow African operator IHS Towers, that abandoned listing plans in 2018.

CELLPHONES: Samsung Galaxy S10 5G Review 5G is great — if you can get it

At $1,299.99, the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G is almost stupidly expensive. But if you do decide to fork out all that money, you’re getting a glimpse into the phones of tomorrow. 5G speeds are genuinely intoxicating – downloads are instant, and streaming is effortless. But can 5G speeds justify the $300 premium over the S10 Plus? Find out in our Samsung Galaxy S10 5G review.

The S10 5G is Samsung’s first stab at a 5G phone – and the Korean company has decided that bigger is indeed better.

The S10 5G gets a whopping 6.7-inch screen, with even Samsung’s own marketing spiel describing it as “massive.” While the S10 Plus gets a 4,100 mAh battery, the S10 5G gets a 4,500 mAh. The S10 5G also gets six cameras – four on the rear, and two on the front.

But does all that extra hardware make the S10 5G a good phone? And, if so, can it justify its enormous price tag?

5G connectivity is the S10 5G’s biggest selling point. Having used the S10 5G for a week in and around London on the Vodafone network, we found the 5G network to be fast – and noticeably faster than 4G for more data-heavy tasks. Everything seemed so much easier.

However, the times where we actually had a 5G connection were infrequent, to say the least. Most of the time, we were stuck using a 4G or 4G+ connection – and when you’re looking down at your phone, knowing it could do better if it wasn’t being held back by the infrastructure, it feels disappointing.

So, is 5G worth it? If you live in a city where you can get a reliable 5G connection — and you can only get 5G in cities — then the S10 5G is fairly enticing. If you don’t live in a city with a strong 5G connection, we wouldn’t bother.

CELLPHONES: Better cell phone coverage vs. neighbors worries. Where do you stand?

Neighbors worried

Briley and two neighbors of the site asked if the tower will be collapsible.

“I wouldn’t want it to fall on homes,” he said, pointing out that collapsible towers are exempt from setback requirements.

Neace said once the tower was approved, the next step will be to meet with building officials, test soil conditions and come up with the final design.

Neighbor Jack Schuller questioned why during a recent revision of the ordinance, a ban against cell towers being 200 feet or closer to a residential property line was removed.

He said the proposed tower “virtually is in my neighbor’s back yard.” That neighbor also expressed concerns to commissioners.

Dodge said the revision occurred during a routine revamping of the ordinance with all of the proper publications and hearings, and had no direct connection to the AT&T application.

“As we were reviewing, we felt that the ordinance in place was too restrictive and we got a legal opinion that it was against federal statutes and we cannot be stricter that those (and telecommunications regulations),” he said.

FCC: Court Vacates FCC Dereg of Cell Tower-Site Reviews

Vacates and remands that portion of larger deregulatory order back to commission

Turns out the race to 5G can’t run roughshod over the landscape, at least as the FCC has proposed it.

In a partial defeat for the FCC and a victory for localities trying to retain their authority over cell tower placement and impact, a federal appeals court has ruled that the FCC did not justify its deregulation of small cell site historic and environmental reviews and has vacated that part of a larger wireless deployment deregulation order.

Over the objections of local government officials and the reservations of Democratic commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel, the FCC voted last September to streamline the path to small cell deployment, including the part on site reviews, billing it as crucial to the rollout of 5G wireless service, an FCC and Trump Administration priority.

The FCC argued that such reviews were not statutorily required, would impede the rollout of 5G networks, and that their costs outweighed any benefit. But as with many FCC decisions, opponents went to court.

That court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit*, said it did not buy the FCC’s argument that such reviews “pose little to no cognizable religious, cultural, or environmental risk,” in particular given “the vast number of proposed deployments and the reality that the Order will principally affect small cells that require new construction,” the court said.

The court found that the FCC did not adequately address the potential harms of deregulation or the benefits of environmental and historic-preservation reviews, particularly for Indian lands that “may include Tribal burial grounds, land vistas, and other sites that Tribal Nations…regard as sacred or otherwise culturally significant.”

For that reason, the court said, the FCC’s regulatory order on small cells is arbitrary and capricious. (It did not vacate the changes the FCC made to tribe’s participation in the reviews).

The court vacated that part of the order and remanded it back to the FCC, which could try to better justify it.

The United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Oklahoma and supporting intervenors had challenged the order.

“This confirms that the FCC cannot just scream “5G” to justify ignoring its duties to Tribal Nations and to the environment,” said Andrew Jay Schwartzman, Georgetown University Law Center, a lawyer who represented the challengers. “The decision does give the FCC more latitude than we would prefer on some of the mechanisms for tribal review, but we will deal with that on the remand.”

Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel saw it a bit differently.

“The court just vacated a large part of the FCC’s 5G deployment strategy,”” she said. “For those paying attention, that means the agency tasked with the future of connectivity didn’t get it right. It’s time to go back to the drawing board and do better.”

5G: Is 5G safe? Here’s what the FCC says

The debate over whether cellphones cause brain cancer has been going on for decades, from the earliest services to every network that ends in a ‘G.’ Now 5G is in the process of rolling out, and new concerns are being raised.

The next-generation mobile network is reviving discussions about health risks, including cancer. While scientists continue their research, one U.S. government agency is is making their stance clear.

After six years of public input and reviews, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has issued a ruling on the safety of 5G. Not only that, the commission has also responded to cancer fears surrounding old and new smartphones.

The FCC rules on the safety of 5G

Most studies over the years have found that there is no connection between cellphones and brain cancer. So what is it about the technology that stokes cancer fears?

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) reports that no conclusive connection between brain cancer and mobile phone use has been found because the gadgets emit non-ionizing radiation, which is low frequency. For reference, household items like microwaves also emit non-ionizing radiation.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, ionizing radiation is high frequency which is why patients and technicians wear lead vests during procedures like X-rays, where that energy is emitted. Too much exposure to ionizing radiation can cause cancer.

And that brings us back to the FCC’s recent ruling. Like everything that’s come before, the FCC says the nation’s 23-year-old safety limits for radio-frequency exposure will be left unchanged even with 5G. The agency said current exposure levels for cellphones and other radio frequency devices remain safe.

5G health controversy

Why has 5G revived brain cancer fears? First, 5G operates on higher radio frequencies than older cellphone standards. However, these higher frequency waves can’t travel long distances or pass well through objects.

To compensate, antennas will have to be installed every 500 feet on average. Soon, there will likely be a 5G antenna on every lamp post you see. This means our exposure to radio frequency radiation will be higher than ever.

Remember we’re not just dealing with cellular signals. We’re also constantly bombarded by radio-frequency radiation from other appliances including Wi-Fi routers and Wi-Fi enabled gadgets.

The Federal Drug Administration finds that despite 5G current data suggest that the cellular industry’s radio frequency safety limits are still acceptable. The agency does add the caveat that it will continue to review future studies.

One thing researchers do agree on is that the most significant health risk mobile phones pose is distracted driving. So drop the phone and buckle up. Buckle up mentally too, because high-speed 5G is the future.

Yes, cell phones do affect your health

Several studies have looked at whether cell phone use increases the risk of developing brain cancer and researchers all basically say it doesn’t. But our smartphones are definitely affecting our health and taking years off our lives in a way we didn’t expect. Smartphones have been connected to raising stress levels and that affects almost the entire body.

LINKS TO: Yes, cell phones do affect your health

No, it’s not brain cancer. Several studies have looked at whether cell phone use increases the risk of developing brain cancer and researchers all basically say it doesn’t.

Oh, but our smartphones are definitely affecting our health and taking years off our lives in a way we didn’t expect. Smartphones have been connected to raising stress levels and that affects almost the entire body.

How do you put a price on a telecoms spectrum license? Chinese operators have picked them up for free — part of Beijing’s attempt to have a national rollout of 5G. Yet in parts of Europe recent auctions have been so expensive that at least one company has had to cut shareholder dividends. In the U.S., where President Donald Trump has declared that “the race to 5G is a race that America must win,” spectrum licenses are being sold at historically low prices.

The answer to the question will determine not just the future of the technological resource — referred to as the “lifeblood of the mobile industry” — and the operators themselves, but will also have a major impact on the next stage in the development of the digital economy.

5G: What is dual connectivity and why is it important for 5G?

5G: Fundamental changes ahead as ground systems prepare for constellations, 5G Communications satellites and their ground segments will play important roles in 5G networks, said Lluc Palerm-Serra, Northern Sky Research senior analyst. “5G opens a window of opportunity for the satellite industry to be integrated with the general telecom ecosystem,” he added.

To make that integration successful, though, ground systems will need to be extremely flexible and adaptable. Terrestrial communications networks rely on software to reconfigure themselves based on demand. Increasingly, individual satellites and constellations rely on software to adapt to changing conditions.

“If you have software-defined networks feeding us on the ground and the payloads or the constellations changing on a regular basis in space, if the ground system is this static entity between the two it’s going to be the bottleneck,” said Greg Quiggle, Kratos Defense and Security Solutions product management vice president. “For the industry to be a good alternative to terrestrial networking, it’s really important that the ground system make that leap forward.”

The goal is to establish ground systems that can dynamically change their configuration without changing hardware, said Christopher Richins, CEO and co-founder of RBC Signals of Redmond, Washington, a startup that offers satellite communications infrastructure as a service.

5G: On 5G wireless, economic growth, Huawei, and security: A long-read Q&A with Roger Entner

Shane Tews: Can you elaborate on how devices will become both smarter and dumber at the same time as a result of 5G?

Roger Entner: If the device has no connection, it becomes dumber because it’s less powerful — because all the computing capabilities will move to the cloud. When the device connects to that data center in the cloud, you can do all the computation there. So instead of having one processor in your phone, you have hundreds and thousands of processors through the cloud computing network that can do all of the work that your phone currently does, just 100 to 1,000 times faster. And with that, you don’t need the same capabilities on your phone anymore because you’re outsourcing it to the cloud.

4.Top 3 Dangers of LED Lights

The top three dangers of LED lighting are:

Danger No. 1 — They deteriorate your vision as they emit excessive amounts of blue wavelengths and fail to counterbalance with regenerative frequencies. They have very little red in them and no infrared. When you’re exposed to higher blue light frequencies, they catalyze excess reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, which damages your eyes in several ways. It also affects your sleep.

Danger No. 2 — They increase oxidative stress and potentially introduce cellular damage while causing mitochondrial dysfunction, metabolic disorder and cancer via suppressed energy production.

A molecule called cytochrome c oxidase, involved in mitochondrial energy production, creates adenosine triphosphate (ATP) or cellular energy, and ATP is needed to fuel all your cells. In fact, it’s crucial for survival — you can’t live without it. But LED light exacerbates chronic disease by suppressing ATP production.

Danger No. 3 — They inhibit your sleep. Electronic screens are a major culprit, but research shows that LEDs of all kinds suppress production of melatonin, and therefore sleep, which can damage your body in ways you may not be aware of. In fact, looking at an electronic device within an hour of going to bed can delay sleep for an hour or more, and TVs can’t filter out blue light. Installing a blue light filter on your TV screen can help.

3. Cell Tower Removed From Schoolyard Due to Cluster of Cancer Cases and Have You Seen the Safety Warning Hidden Inside Your Cellphone? — School children in Ripon, California, being diagnosed with cancer sparked a new dialogue about whether electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation from Sprint cell towers was the culprit. Naysayers said the towers emitted less radiation than government standards prescribed, but the evidence remained.

If you’re familiar with EMFs, you know the U.S. Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) guidelines are outdated, and worse, much of the research was bankrolled by the industries standing to make a profit from them. While denying any harm being done, Sprint agreed to move the towers, but that doesn’t negate the fact that wireless 5G towers are the next phase coming out, touted to make data speeds 100 times faster.

However, there are downsides, according to CBS News, which noted that “5G requires the installation of new equipment across the U.S. All of the companies that provide wireless service are building their own 5G networks.”3 In addition, the first 5G towers were slated for installation in several U.S. cities as of late 2018.

The industry plans to erect about 300,000 new antennas — about the number of cell towers put in place over three decades. Then they have to be not only closer to users, but while relatively smaller, much closer together, experts explain.

Denial from Dana Farber Cancer Institute:

HEALTH: Does WiFi Exposure Lead to Cancer?

So far, there is no consistent evidence that WiFi routers or WiFi-powered devices increase cancer risk. Despite low-frequency EMFs being classified as possibly carcinogenic, researchers have not observed a direct connection between these devices and cancer. The best way to protect yourself from radiation emissions from routers and electronic devices is to minimize exposure.

HEALTH LIFESTYLE: MANILA — Netflix has acquired the international rights to stream the Filipino film “Ang Babaeng Allergic Sa WiFi” starring Kapamilya actress Sue Ramirez.

Translated as “The Girl Allergic To WiFi,” the sweet, romantic comedy film produced by Cignal Entertainment, October Train Films and The IdeaFirst Company will be available on the popular streaming platform starting August 21. It will be available globally except in China, Taiwan, Japan and India.

It is also the first title from media giant Cignal Entertainment to be shown on Netflix.

Directed by Jun Robles Lana, “Ang Babaeng Allergic Sa WiFi” follows the story of Norma, a popular girl in high school who ends up being diagnosed with Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity Disorder (EHS).

Unable to use or be around any gadget, Norma is sent to a remote location without any mobile signal to help her recuperate from the rare condition. Unfortunately, the long distance as well as the lack of communication with her boyfriend puts a strain on their relationship.

The film, which also stars Jameson Blake and Markus Paterson, had its theatrical run during the 2018 Pista Ng Pelikulang Pilipino.

Movie review: ‘Ang Babaeng Allergic Sa Wifi’ sends powerful message

“I am excited that our film will reach the diverse audience of Netflix,” director Lana said.

“The younger viewers will see themselves in the characters and perhaps wonder what it’s like to be suddenly disconnected from the digital world. …Older viewers, meanwhile, will see the nostalgia and see how life, and love, survived without technology,” the director added.

PPP review: ‘Ang Babaeng Allergic Sa Wifi’ sends powerful message

Nerdy introvert and social media hermit Aries (Jameson Blake) is smitten with the quirky wide-eyed beauty of Norma (Sue Ramirez) from the first time he saw her on campus. He never got the guts to tell her what he felt for her, and just admired her from a distance. Aries was shocked to learn that Norma already had a boyfriend — a popular basketball jock and (unfortunately) his very own older brother, Leo (Markus Paterson).

One day, Norma had a nosebleed and felt very ill. All the tests at the hospital had normal results. When it seemed that she was experiencing a hypersensitivity to electromagnetic radiation from WiFi signals, Norma had to retreat to her grandmother’s house six hours away from the city to escape her curse. This forced leave away from online technology would make Norma realize who really loved her more.

The senior actors stay mainly in the background here. Boots Anson Roa played Norma’s kind grandmother, who kept her colorfully bohemian house stocked with relics of the past (typewriter, tape recorder, gramophone, etc… all in perfect working condition). Yayo Aguila played Norma’s supportive mother, with a subdued Kiko Matos as her second husband Joey. Lee O’Brian and Candy Pangilinan played Aries and Leo’s parents. One interesting detail I noticed in the credits was that Iza Calzado provided the voice of the GPS navigation.

It was writer-director Jun Robles Lana’s bittersweet exploration of this technological phenomenon that distinguished this film from other rom-coms. This had a lighter, more youthful tone than his other films I had seen before, but the incisive social commentary Lana is known for remains clear. Some situations may come across as corny or even cliche, but the beautiful cinematography and those Keiko Necesario songs in the soundtrack give this one a different vibrance.

This movie delivers an important message about our interpersonal relationships and how the Internet and social media had eroded on them. At this point, you really have to make a conscious (and practically Herculean) effort to disconnect yourself from the virtual world in order to connect yourself to the real world. This film will make you reflect on how to nurture the relationships that you value most — the old-fashioned, low-tech way. Life need not be empty without WiFi. 7/10

WARFARE: The Mind Has No Firewall  (!998)

The human body, much like a computer, contains myriad data processors. They include, but are not limited to, the chemical-electrical activity of the brain, heart, and peripheral nervous system, the signals sent from the cortex region of the brain to other parts of our body, the tiny hair cells in the inner ear that process auditory signals, and the light-sensitive retina and cornea of the eye that process visual activity.[2] We are on the threshold of an era in which these data processors of the human body may be manipulated or debilitated. Examples of unplanned attacks on the body’s data-processing capability are well-documented. Strobe lights have been known to cause epileptic seizures. Not long ago in Japan, children watching television cartoons were subjected to pulsating lights that caused seizures in some and made others very sick.

Defending friendly and targeting adversary data-processing capabilities of the body appears to be an area of weakness in the US approach to information warfare theory, a theory oriented heavily toward systems data-processing and designed to attain information dominance on the battlefield. Or so it would appear from information in the open, unclassified press. This US shortcoming may be a serious one, since the capabilities to alter the data- processing systems of the body already exist. A recent edition of U.S. News and World Report highlighted several of these “wonder weapons” (acoustics, microwaves, lasers) and noted that scientists are “searching the electromagnetic and sonic spectrums for wavelengths that can affect human behavior.”[3] A recent Russian military article offered a slightly different slant to the problem, declaring that “humanity stands on the brink of a psychotronic war” with the mind and body as the focus. That article discussed Russian and international attempts to control the psycho-physical condition of man and his decisionmaking processes by the use of VHF-generators, “noiseless cassettes,” and other technologies.

An entirely new arsenal of weapons, based on devices designed to introduce subliminal messages or to alter the body’s psychological and data-processing capabilities, might be used to incapacitate individuals. These weapons aim to control or alter the psyche, or to attack the various sensory and data-processing systems of the human organism. In both cases, the goal is to confuse or destroy the signals that normally keep the body in equilibrium.

This article examines energy-based weapons, psychotronic weapons, and other developments designed to alter the ability of the human body to process stimuli. One consequence of this assessment is that the way we commonly use the term “information warfare” falls short when the individual soldier, not his equipment, becomes the target of attack.

SMART METERS: Guidelines need to be updated

Posted Wednesday, August 7, 2019 3:00 am

In his perspective “refuting concerns about Wi-Fi” (Leader, July 31), retired physicist Bill Kaune points to safety guidelines set by the FCC assuring us that electromagnetic radiation (EMR) emitted by our RF-transmitting electric meters and other common wireless devices is not harmful.

Thousands of studies and hundreds of reputable scientists around the world have invalidated those guidelines since Mr. Kaune retired two decades ago. Why? FCC guidelines only consider thermal effects—how much your skin heats up when exposed to EMR. But it is now understood that the heating of tissue is not the main problem with microwave radiation; these frequencies affect our bodies in other significant ways.

WSU Professor Emeritus Martin Pall estimates that FCC acceptable levels are 7.2 million times too high. In a 2018 paper he identifies attacks on our nervous systems, DNA damage, and cancer-causing mechanisms, among other issues. Dr. Pall further states that pulsing wireless devices, like our utility meters, are damaging not only due to radiation: “the pulsations and the polarization make these EMFs much more biologically active.”

So why hasn’t the FCC updated its 1996 guidelines to reflect alarming, more current research about technologies to which we are increasingly being exposed?

An investigation by the Harvard School of Ethics answers that question in a 2015 report “Captured Agency: How the Federal Communications Industry Is Dominated by the Industries It Presumably Regulates.” In chapters like “Just Don’t Bring Up Health,” and “Wireless Bullies and the Tobacco Analogy,” Harvard’s comprehensive exposé documents FCC corruption in great detail.

While many continue to deny health impacts from the wireless explosion, a segment of our community has asked our PUD to provide a safer, non-transmitting, non-pulsing utility meter option—analog meters. A policy is currently being developed to allow meter choice for customers with health concerns about our current RF-transmitting meters. Ana Wolpin

SMART METERS INDUSTRY CLAIMS: The Benefits of Smart Meters

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has authorized the state’s investor owned utilities to replace conventional customer meters with Smart Meters in order to give consumers greater control over their energy use. Smart Meters enable a utility to provide customers with detailed information about their energy usage at different times of the day, which in turn enables customers to manage their energy use more proactively.

Smart Meters are being rolled out nationwide and internationally. According to the Edison Foundation, more than 8 million Smart Meters have been deployed by electric utilities in the U.S. and nearly 60 million should be in place by 2020. In California, the CPUC authorized Southern California Edison to install approximately 5.3 million new Smart Meters, San Diego Gas and Electric Company (SDG&E) 1.4 million electric Smart Meters and 900,000 natural gas meters, and Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) approximately 5 million electric meters and 4.2 million natural gas meters.

The benefits of Smart Meters to customers, the state, and utilities, include:

UTILITIES FLORIDA: Florida cities call for stronger utility energy savings targets

Florida cities and counties are going to bat for their residents and pushing for utilities to set stronger energy savings goals. Utility efficiency programs are a critical tool supporting local government efforts to improve sustainability, reduce emissions, and promote job growth. But as cities and counties are working to ramp up energy savings, utilities are going backwards.

The Florida Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act (FEECA) directs the state’s Public Service Commission (PSC) to adopt goals for utilities to increase energy efficiency and conservation efforts. In 2014, we reported that energy savings goals for Florida utilities shrank significantly to about 10% of prior targets. The Commission revisits energy savings targets every five years, and this time around, it’s even worse than before. In fact, four of the seven Florida utilities subject to FEECA have proposed goals of zero for the years 2020-2029.

Local governments are taking notice. In a series of resolutions and letters to the PSC, Florida cities and counties are calling for far more ambitious energy efficiency targets that align with local targets for greenhouse gas emission reductions.

FEATURED: Conflicts of Interest and Misleading Statements in Official Reports about the Health Consequences of Radiofrequency Radiation and Some New Measurements of Exposure Levels

School of Psychology, University of Auckland, Auckland 1142, New Zealand

Received: 29 March 2019 / Accepted: 25 April 2019 / Published: 5 May 2019

Official reports to governments throughout the Western world attempt to allay public concern about the increasing inescapability of the microwaves (also known as radiofrequency radiation or RF) emitted by “smart” technologies, by repeating the dogma that the only proven biological effect of RF is acute tissue heating, and assuring us that the levels of radiation to which the public are exposed are significantly less than those needed to cause acute tissue heating. The present paper first shows the origin of this “thermal-only” dogma in the military paranoia of the 1950s. It then reveals how financial conflict of interest and intentionally misleading statements have been powerful factors in preserving that dogma in the face of now overwhelming evidence that it is false, using one 2018 report to ministers of the New Zealand government as an example. Lastly, some new pilot measurements of ambient RF power densities in Auckland city are reported and compared with levels reported in other cities, various international exposure limits, and levels shown scientifically to cause biological harm. It is concluded that politicians in the Western world should stop accepting soothing reports from individuals with blatant conflicts of interest and start taking the health and safety of their communities seriously.

FCC: Trump Considers Executive Order to Make FCC Police How Social Media Prioritizes Content (Report)

News comes a day after Trump campaign halted Twitter spending in response to suspension of Mitch McConnell’s account

According to CNN, the executive order would also ask the Federal Trade Commission to open a public complaint forum of its own and work with the FCC to produce a report into how tech companies curate content. The network said also that the order would target platforms with month users equaling or surpassing one-eighth of the population of the United States, and specifically names Facebook, Google, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest and Snapchat.

The draft executive order also seeks to limit the interpretation of a key part of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, the Communications Decency Act, which protects tech platforms from liability for most of what users post if the companies in question act “in good faith,” CNN reporting, adding that the executive order would specifically ask the FCC to disqualify tech companies from the good faith provision if it is determined the company removed content “without notifying the user who posted the material, or if the decision is proven to be evidence of anticompetitive, unfair or deceptive practices.”

FCC: The FCC says 5G is safe, again

There has never been compelling evidence that 5G radio waves are dangerous. While they’re higher frequency than the radio waves used for 4G, they remain in the part of the radio spectrum that doesn’t damage human DNA — what’s known as non-ionizing radiation. Even the higher-frequency emissions used in 5G remain less energetic than visible light.

On a call with reporters, FCC officials said that there was no sign 5G airwaves would be any less safe than the airwaves used for 3G or 4G.

The commission has made similar statements before on calls with reporters, albeit with less clarity. It’s also implicitly acknowledged 5G as safe by approving the use of devices that support it.

But today’s gesture is its firmest acknowledgement yet that the FCC believes 5G is safe to use. By leaving emissions standards unchanged, the commission says that its existing standards are already strict enough to determine when radio emissions become problematic. A properly functioning 5G device still falls within those standards.

FCC deems cellphones with 5G tech safe

In a new proposal, the FCC concludes current radio frequency emission levels are OK.

The FCC has for years been criticized for not updating its cellphone safety standards since 1996. Critics have argued that the levels should be reviewed based on the latest wireless technology. The agency uses a value known as a SAR, or specific absorption rate, to determine if devices can be safely sold in the US. The SAR measures the amount of power that’s absorbed in the body per given mass.

While the FCC hasn’t updated its SAR level recommendations since the 1990s, others have reviewed the limits. In March of this year, the engineering group IEEE recommended the safety levels remain about the same as they have been since 1996.

The FCC opened a proceeding in 2013 to look into the RF levels. And the order circulated Thursday by Pai is the result of that review.

FCC says 5G is safe, wants to maintain current RF exposure limits

“The United States’ RF exposure limits for handheld devices are among the most stringent in the world,” the FCC said in a newly published statement. The agency’s Office of Engineering and Technology’s Julius Knapp clarified:

The FCC sets radiofrequency limits in close consultation with the FDA and other health agencies. After a thorough review of the record and consultation with these agencies, we find it appropriate to maintain the existing radiofrequency limits, which are among the most stringent in the world for cell phones.

The FDA backs the existing RF exposure guidelines, stating that scientific evidence at this point in time hasn’t found any negative health effects in humans at or below the current limits. Under this proposal, the FCC wants to establish ‘a uniform set of guidelines’ that will make sure that companies are compliant with the limits.

5G: Indian Tribes Win Bid to Keep Federal Reviews for Small Cells (1)

5G; FCC Court deals blow to FCC’s bid to speed 5G rollout

FCC has tried to cut red tape

(CNN) – The Federal Communications Commission tried to expedite the rollout of 5G wireless technology by cutting red tape. Now a US court has found the regulators erred in trying to exempt 5G cell sites from environmental impact and historic preservation reviews.

The effort by US telecom regulators to speed thedeployment of 5G wireless technology through deregulation has thus far largely survived a court challenge by environmental and tribal groups.

But in a decision released Friday, a three-judge panel for the US Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit ruled against one of regulators’ key claims: That 5G is so important, cell sites using the technology can bypass environmental and historical preservation reviews.

In the ruling, the judges said such reviews are meant to “assess the effects of new construction on, among other things, sites of religious and cultural importance to federally recognized Indian Tribes.” But at the same time, they held, the FCC’s order “effectively reduced” the role of those tribes in the decision making process for new 5G cell sites.

The result is a mixed bag for the FCC, which voted last year to override many municipal rules surrounding 5G permitting in a bid to accelerate approvals for 5G cell sites.

The judges did not address big swaths of the FCC’s deregulation. For example, they declined to address the FCC’s move forcing cities to approve cell sites on expedited time frames, or requirements aimed at reducing the cost of permitting. Those are the subject of a separate case in the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

“I am pleased that the court upheld key provisions of last March’s infrastructure decision. Most importantly, the court affirmed our decision that parties cannot demand upfront fees before reviewing any cell sites, large or small,” said FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr.

But the panel dealt a blow to the FCC when it said the agency erred in trying to exempt 5G cell sites from historical and environmental reviews.

“Today’s decision confirms that the FCC cannot just scream ‘5G’ to justify ignoring its duties to Tribal Nations and to the environment,” said Andrew Schwartzman, a lecturer at Georgetown University who participated in the case.

Pai tried to kill environmental and historic-preservation review of small cells.

5G INDUSTRY:  Industry Voices—Pongratz: 5G is not all the same

With the efficiency uplift between 4G and 5G expected to be in the order of ~30%  when comparing apples-to-apples, the DSS technology is a compelling solution to maximize the use of the sub 6 GHz spectrum. And from a marketing perspective, short of just changing the LTE logo to 5G, DSS is likely the next most expeditious approach for realizing a true nationwide 5G branded network.

And even though all roads ultimately lead to 5G, it will be interesting to see if the competitive dynamics in combination with the different spectrum assets will spur operators to accelerate the use of DSS at a faster pace than technically required, just to ensure a competitive 5G marketing message.

To sum, 5G is exciting, but it is not all the same and the 5G term without additional context will do little to communicate the value for the suppliers, operators, and the end users. With LTE networks performing rather well, it is now up to marketing to decide how to capitalize on the extreme variations with all the possible 5G flavors. In other words, until mid-band spectrum is available, marketing will ultimately decide if 5G eMBB is a branding exercise or as Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg said in the second-quarter 2019 earnings call— 5G is a “transformative feeling.”

(barf alert:)

5G; The FCC says 5G is safe, but that won’t stop conspiracy theorists

Most of the scientific community has already concluded that the latest generation of cellular technology, 5G, is at least as safe to human health as the 2G, 3G, and 4G technologies that became globally ubiquitous over the past two decades. But once radio emissions safety questions were raised in the United States, the Federal Communications Commission took another look at the evidence. After an extended review, the agency has just given 5G a fairly definitive thumbs up for safety, though even this high level of reassurance is unlikely to stop conspiracy theorists from suggesting otherwise.

On paper, the FCC’s findings stop short of explicitly declaring any cellular technology trouble-free, but if you parse the legalese, that conclusion is hard to ignore. As Commission Chairman Ajit Pai explains, the FCC will “continue to ensure the health and safety of workers and consumers of wireless technology” by “maintain[ing] the Commission’s existing radiofrequency (RF) exposure limits,” which “for handheld devices are among the most stringent in the world.” Put more simply, the FCC says your existing cellular phone is already operating within strict, safe limits, and as the 5G era dawns, there’s no need to reduce radio signal strength further.

Unfortunately, I doubt that those conclusions will be enough to put the issue to rest. At the same time as it offered those assurances, the FCC said that it plans to seek public comments on “a rule to formalize the Commission’s existing methods of determining compliance with the RF exposure standard for devices operating at high frequencies.” Again decoded, that’s saying the FCC already has an unofficial way to approve high-frequency equipment — read: millimeter wave 5G devices — but for legal reasons, it needs to take public input into account before formalizing the compliance standards.

As much as I strongly believe in the value of public input into regulatory matters, the comment process has become at best a mess, if not an outright farce. Over the past two years, 5G has inspired pseudo-scientistsconspiracy theorists, andRussian disinformation trolls to target decent people looking to give greater meaning to their generalized fears about new technologies. It doesn’t take much effort to find people on the internet who are convinced the government is deliberately or negligently irradiating the population using radio towers.

Consequently, small anti-5G groups have popped up to protest radio towers that they think are poisoning people, birds, and bees. If this public comment period proceeds like past ones, the FCC will open its comment box to “listen” to them — and others who have their own reasons to oppose 5G, such as lobbying dollars or prior use of similar frequencies — then abruptly dismiss their concerns en masse before moving on to the next issue.

On the one hand, this is entirely understandable. If you believe most scientists and government officials, there’s no need to keep debating whether 5G is safe. Good science suggests that high-frequency millimeter waves are even less capable of penetrating the human body and supposedly causing cancer than the lower-frequency signals used in 2G, 3G, and 4G devices, which even after decades of skepticism have not been conclusively implicated as health risks. Asking for further public comment on this topic only gives fringe groups another chance to attract attention.

So prepare yourself for one last gasp of anti-5G health agitation over the next few months. But don’t be surprised if the FCC listens politely, then — for better or worse — abruptly waves off the concerns before moving on to the next item on its agenda. The debate over whether 5G has negative health consequences might not be definitively settled, but once the FCC finishes its comment period, the discussion is going to move into the distant background, at least in the United States.

HEALTH: An Invisible Threat (Radiation) | History Documentary | Reel Truth History Published on Jul 16, 2019  1 hour 12 minutes video

(some English, Spanish w/ English subtitles )

An Invisible Threat looks at the relationship between microwave technology and health, investigating the conflicts of interest among industry representatives, politicians, scientists and consumers that leave us unprotected to the effects of radiation.
Wireless networks irradiate microwaves indiscriminately across cities, villages and the countryside of all developed
countries. This increasing exposure disturbs the biological processes that are essential for the healthy growth of human beings, animals and plants – it especially affects children and teenagers.
The reasonable doubt that has arisen from independent scientific reports regarding the harmful effects of these technologies has led the Council of Europe to recommend its members countries apply the Precautionary Principle. In June 2011, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a body of the World Health Organization (WHO), admitted for the first time that microwaves produced by mobile phones could be “possible carcinogens”.
Our investigation delves into three groups: the telecommunications industry (mobile telephone companies, MMF); official organisations (WHO, IARC, ICNIRP) and official scientific reports (BioInitiative, Interphone, CEFALO).
In parallel, An Invisible Threat takes in the daily life of Minerva Palomar, a woman affected by the electromagnetic hypersensitivity syndrome and the obstacles she needs to overcome in order to lead a normal life.
An Invisible Threat has a clear international focus, dealing with a social issue of global importance. Microwave effects are currently being analysed and debated in almost all developed countries. The question is, are we prepared for the answers.

HEALTH: Human milk as “chrononutrition”: implications for child health and development

Human biology follows recurring daily rhythms that are governed by circadian cues in the environment. Here we show that human milk is a powerful form of “chrononutrition,” formulated to communicate time-of-day information to infants. However, 85% of breastfed infants in the US consume some milk that does not come directly from the breast but is pumped and stored in advance of feeding. Expressed milk is not necessarily circadian-matched (e.g., an infant might drink breastmilk pumped in the evening on the following morning). Ingesting mistimed milk may disrupt infants’ developing circadian rhythms, potentially contributing to sleep problems and decreased physiological attunement with their mothers and environments. Dysregulated circadian biology may compromise infant health and development. Despite wide-ranging public health implications, the timing of milk delivery has received little empirical study, and no major pediatric or public health organization has issued recommendations regarding the circadian-matching of milk. However, potential adverse developmental and health consequences could be ameliorated by simple, low-cost interventions to label and circadian-match stored milk. The current paper reviews evidence for human milk as chrononutrition and makes recommendations for future research, practice, and policy.

HEALTH: Geopathic Stress Documentary 1 hour 10 minutes video

Published on Feb 14, 2012

Over the past century we have developed technologies, such as mobile phones, that pose a direct threat to our future health, but there is an equally harmful radiation that comes from the earth and could be responsible for many of the health problems facing the modern world. It is called ‘Geopathic Stress’. This documentary looks at the effect of geopathic stress and electromagnetic radiation on our health. For the first time ever, a link is established between them. This ground-breaking documentary is a wake-up call for the modern medical and scientific establishments and also for anyone who has an interest in their own health.

HEALTH OT: The “Science” That Google Relies On (Lynn McTaggart)

A good percentage of the medical research published in the world’s top medical literature is ghostwritten. In the pharmaceutical world, ‘ghostwriting’ has a particular meaning. A drugs company will hire a PR firm — known in pharma-speak as a ‘medical education and communication company (MECC)’ – to prepare clinical trials, engage a ghost to write an article with a positive spin on the results, and then enlist a prominent academic to put his name to a paper he’s had nothing to do with in order to give it a patina of respectability. This ‘study’ will then be submitted (and usually published) in a respectable medical journal. That study then is published and becomes part of the scientific canon.

I’ve written about the following case study before, but it’s worth reiterating it here.

HOUSING SMART HOME UPCOMING ROUNDTABLE: Our WIRED SCHOOLS group is planning an upcoming (recording later this month through ZOOM) Roundtable – we would like to feature THREE expert panelists.  We already have our certified building biologist in place – Risa Suzuki – https://risasuzuki.com but we would also like to add an appraiser and a medical practitioner – one with experience in EMR – environmental medicine – epidemiology, etc. who might address the health impacts from the EMR inside a so-called “Smart Home”.

We plan to use HGTV’s 2019 “Smart Home” https://www.tomsguide.com/us/hgtv-smart-home-2019-gadgets,review-6335.html with all its 17 powerful radiating gadgets as an example.

When I asked Risa if she’d guesstimate the radiation levels in a house like this, she offered:

Risa Suzuki to Christine S. Zipps “Easily in the thousands of microwatts/meter squared. Smart homes also have a massive control center; most tech heavy homes also have boosters/mesh networks as well. Unwinding the tech is also very costly and not as straightforward as you’d think because the switches aren’t traditional (i.e. they’ve all got chips) so it’s not an easy switch”

We plan to inform the HGTV designer of this home of this plan – to invite her to be a participating attendee and will open to public to attend (free) with audio/video muted.   They will be able to see the discussion live and post their questions in CHAT panel to be reviewed at the end of the session.  We plan to not run longer than an hour.  After a light edit, it will be posted on my YouTube channel.

We also plan to invite Realtor(s) to be participating attendees as well for they have shown great interest in learning this information.  In fact, we have been invited to present before a local Realtor Association’s education session next month!

Wondering whether with all the talent among this group, if there are appraiser/medical practitioners with interest/availability to join us for this project.  If so, kindly respond to this message.

Many thanks for your time and consideration.

SMART METERS UK: A smart meter runs up £1,148 bill

I was a customer of Economy Energy when it collapsed last December. I’d made monthly payments by direct debit and assumed all was up to date. However, we have just received a demand of £1,148 from its administrators Grant Thornton with the threat of a debt collection agency if not paid within 10 days. This is an error, caused by a smart meter fitted last autumn. The bill showed a massive sudden increase in gas usage and must have been due a recording error. I was trying to resolve it with Economy when it went bust.

UTILITIES FEATURED: Michael Moore-backed doc ‘Planet of the Humans’ explores alternative energy’s shortcomings

Posted By Sonia Khaleel on Thu, Aug 8, 2019 at 6:54 pm

Planet of the Humans, a documentary promoted by Michael Moore, explores the proposed solutions of alternative energy and unveils the industry’s ongoing dependence on fossil fuels.
Director Jeff Gibbs, a collaborator of Moore’s who produced Fahrenheit 9/11 and Bowling for Columbine, looks into whether the environmental movement will even address the growing climate change concerns faced by our planet. In the doc, the filmmaker profiles biofuel, windmills, electric cars, solar panels, and more, and discovers that alternative energy is still very much intertwined with both natural gas and coal in multiple ways. In short, the filmmakers stated that we as a society are “addicted” to fossil fuels, according to The Associated Press.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — What if alternative energy isn’t all it’s cracked up to be? That’s the provocative question explored in the documentary “Planet of the Humans,” which is backed and promoted by filmmaker Michael Moore and directed by one of his longtime collaborators. It premiered last week at his Traverse City Film Festival.

The film, which does not yet have distribution, is a low-budget but piercing examination of what the filmmakers say are the false promises of the environmental movement and why we’re still “addicted” to fossil fuels. Director Jeff Gibbs takes on electric cars, solar panels, windmills, biomass, biofuel, leading environmentalist groups like the Sierra Club, and even figures from Al Gore and Van Jones, who served as Barack Obama’s special adviser for green jobs, to 350.orgleader Bill McKibben, a leading environmentalist and advocate for grassroots climate change movements.
Gibbs, who produced Moore’s “Bowling for Columbine” and “Fahrenheit 9/11,” didn’t set out to take on the environmental movement. He said he wanted to know why things weren’t getting better. But when he started pulling on the thread, he and Moore said they were shocked to find how inextricably entangled alternative energy is with coal and natural gas, since they say everything from wind turbines to electric car charging stations are tethered to the grid, and even how two of the Koch brothers — Charles and David — are tied to solar panel production through their glass production business.

“It turned out the wakeup call was about our own side,” Gibbs said in a phone interview. “It was kind of crushing to discover that the things I believed in weren’t real, first of all, and then to discover not only are the solar panels and wind turbines not going to save us … but (also) that there is this whole dark side of the corporate money … It dawned on me that these technologies were just another profit center.”

Both know the film is going to be a “tough pill to swallow.” It was a difficult eye-opener for them as well.

“We all want to feel good about something like the electric car, but in the back of your head somewhere you’ve thought, ’Yeah, but where is the electricity coming from? And it’s like, ‘I don’t want to think about that, I’m glad we have electric cars,’” Moore said. “I’ve passed by the windmill farms, and oh it’s so beautiful to see them going, and don’t tell me that we’ve gone too far now and it isn’t going to save us … Well, my feeling is just hit me with everything. I’m like let’s just deal with it now, all at once.”

It’s part of the reason why they had to make it independently. Gibbs said he tried for years to get an environmental group on board to help offset the costs, only to be turned down at every door. He was further disheartened when, in the film, he approaches people like Jones, McKibben and a local Sierra Club leader, and asks them about their stance on biofuel and biomass. Biomass, like wood and garbage, can be used to produce heat and is considered a renewable source of energy. It can also be converted to gas or liquid biofuels that can be burned for energy.

He finds every one ill-prepared to comment on their stance about the biomass process, which the documentary says requires cutting down enormous numbers of trees to produce the woodchips that are converted into energy. Neither Jones nor McKibben responded to request for comment from The Associated Press.

“I like so many people in the film and I’m one of those people who wanted to believe all of these years that that was the right path,” Moore said. ”(But) I refuse to let us die out. I refuse to let this planet die.”

They were even nervous to show it to the festival crowd, where they expected maybe a “50-50 response.” Instead, they got a standing ovation. And there were even members of The Sierra Club there.

“It’s up to people who actually share the same values to sometimes call each other out and bring out the uncomfortable truths,” Gibbs said. “This is not a film by climate change deniers, this is a film by people who really care about the environment.”

Although the findings will be disheartening, both Gibbs and Moore say they hope that it inspires people to reset and start thinking differently.

“Now we can begin to come up with the right solutions that might make a difference … The film doesn’t have the answers but it will get us asking a better set of questions,” Gibbs said. “I really do trust that when millions of people are discussing an issue, answers will emerge … This is what we do as humans, we solve problems, but we’ve got to have the right questions.”

UTILITIES NY: Sullivan County concerned with proposed NYSEG rate increase

NYSEG’s request for a rate increase is tied to improvements in several areas of service, including measures to improve the reliability and resiliency of electric service, improved emergency planning, new incentives for qualifying businesses to improve their energy efficiency, and the deployment of advanced technologies such as smart meters.

The utility also proposes to make some changes to customer service, including closing walk-in offices including the one in the Town of Liberty.

“The County’s point of view in commenting on the rate case has been, ‘What does this mean for our residents and businesses?’” said Potosek.  “The proposed rate increase is estimated to add about $10 a month to most residential customers’ bills. We think this is exorbitant, but whatever rate increase the PSC ultimately approves, in the aggregate it will represent a lot of new revenue for NYSEG. So we have read carefully the various rate plans to examine how NYSEG will apply whatever rate increase they are granted towards improved services that will benefit our community as a whole.”
