The Need to Grow

directed: Rob Herring US 2019 1h 42m

The Need to Grow follows pioneers of cutting edge technology as they fight to localise sustainable food systems and regenerate Earth's dying soils. This is the interconnected stories of three unique individuals and the documentary aims to explore some of the deeply-rooted issues in agriculture. Director Ryan Wirick works at understanding the nature of problems and finding solutions that may help future generations. This is a collaboration with activist and Director Rob Herring, accompanied by Executive Producer and Narrator Rosario Dawson.

Soil scientists estimate that at the rate we are depleting our farmland, there could be fewer than 60 years of soil left on earth. The question is, can we feed the world without destroying the planet? The answer depends on what we do now. Journey into the hearts and innovations of three very different leaders; an 8 year old girl who challenges the ethics of a beloved organisation; a renegade farmer who struggles to keep his land as he revolutionises resource-efficient agriculture; and an accomplished visionary inventor who faces catastrophe in the midst of developing a game-changing technology. An epic story of solutions and struggles it'll make you laugh, cry, give you chills and inspire you to participate in the restoration of the Earth.
